A 75-year-old American hunter, Ernie Dosio, has died after being trampled by a herd of elephants during a hunting expedition in Central Africa earlier this month. The incident reportedly occurred on April 17, 2026, in the Lope region of Gabon, where Dosio had been pursuing a rare forest antelope.

According to accounts from the scene, the experienced outdoorsman was moving through dense forest terrain when he encountered a group of elephants. The animals, believed to have been protecting a young calf, reacted aggressively. Witness descriptions suggest the herd emerged suddenly from thick undergrowth, leaving little time for escape. Dosio was caught in the stampede and suffered fatal injuries.

Ernie Dosio, a vineyard owner from Lodi in California, was known for his long-standing involvement in big-game hunting. His home reportedly featured numerous mounted trophies from hunts across different regions, reflecting decades of participation in the activity. During this particular trip, he was licensed to hunt certain species, though reports indicate he was tracking a yellow-backed duiker at the time of the encounter.

Wildlife experts note that African elephants are highly protective, especially when calves are present. While typically not aggressive without cause, they can charge at high speeds and pose significant danger when they perceive a threat. Their size and strength make such encounters extremely hazardous, particularly in dense environments where visibility is limited.

The incident has sparked renewed discussion about the risks associated with big-game hunting and human interaction with wildlife. Authorities and local officials in Gabon have not released further details but are believed to have reviewed the circumstances surrounding the event.

Dosio is survived by his family, including his children. His death underscores the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the serious dangers present in remote hunting environments.
